April Smith, one of my local favorites who I have raved about before, is practicing an innovative new way to connect to fans by having them fund her next album which she hopes to self-release.
Through Kickstarter, a website which offers a platform for the funding of creative projects, April Smith created a project for her fans to pledge and donate funds to support the recording of her album. There are different rewards for each level of pledge, including free music, autographed albums, a role in a future music video, dinner with Smith and her band and a guest appearance onstage at one of her shows. She set a 75-day timeline and is already 65% to her goal of $10,000 with 43 days remaining!

With the record industrys ever-changing current state, it is refreshing to see Smith take advantage of this platform. Not only does the project give her financial support, it demonstrates her fans deep loyalty to her music and goals. Though I see Smith's talent someday landing her a major label deal, this DIY project certainty brings her one step closer.
